If you’ve ever imagined what kind of vehicle you might want if you one day found yourself in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, or a nuclear fallout, or even a warzone, something that looks a lot like the Terry Town RV Showhauler might’ve sprung to mind. 4×4? Check. Steel plated bumper with bull bar? Check. Amenities enough to survive off the grid for several months? Check.

The Showhauler has got it all and more, although despite falling into a Class Super C it’s pretty small compared to some of the creations available from Terry Town RV, who are specialists in plus size RVs, coaches and motorhomes. And if we had to pick one vehicle to travel around the world in- well, it’d be a tough choice between this and the Pure 5000 Zetros overlander we had a look at earlier this year.

A side on view of this enormous Showhauler RV.

It all starts with a 2017 Freightliner Business Class chassis onto which a 2018 coach is built, sitting on 44” Firestone military tires and packing a 350bhp 8.9L Cummins Straight 6 Power Plant engine under the hood. It’s 4 wheel drive, naturally, with front and rear locking differentials, capable of towing up to 20,000lbs on a conventional hitch. Unusually it features a four-door crew cab, part of which expands into a sleeping area, capable of seating up to five people.

The front of this truck looks like it was designed to plow through zombie hoards.

This truck is also built to withstand just about anything, with expanding steel side walls, a 3/8” thick steel plated bumper and front-mounted LED light bar. It features an external storage cabinet at the rear, and a spare tire carrier on the back that sits so high it requires a hand crank winch to be lowered. An 80 gallon water tank sits below the chassis, with a back up 50 gallon diesel tank to keep your fuel reserves topped up.

Moving inside the solid maple hardwood cupboards and grey upholstery are reminiscent of a 1980’s suburban semi, contrary to the truck’s military facade. The ceiling is higher than in most motorhomes we’ve seen, which allows for a queen size bed to sit over the cab. Just behind this is a four seater dinette area with underneath storage and table, and opposite this is a three seater sofa which converts into a bed. A single bunk sits above the sofa, and the triple seat in the cab converts into a flat power sofa, taking the total number of sleeping spaces up to seven.

At the rear of the Showhauler is a large bathroom with a double size shower, porcelain foot flush toilet and a basin embedded into a black countertop with stone splash back, meaning you won’t feel without any of your home comforts when overlanding in this machine.

The truck features an equally large kitchen complete with all the amenities you’d expect to find in a house; a microwave, two burner induction cooktop, a full size refrigerator, plenty of storage with soft close drawers and a sink with drop-in insert and shower tap.

Powering that induction cooktop as well as the truck’s LED lighting and two AC units are a 520W solar panel, two AGM 245Ah batteries, a 2,000W inverter and an 8,000W diesel generator for back up. There’s also an Oasis Zephyr Hydronic water heater, a satellite dish and HD TV, an 18ft Weather Pro Power Awning with LED lighting and a GPS radio with backup monitor, just to name a few of the truck’s many mod cons and survival gear.

Most of the creations from Terry Town RV are built to order, however this particular Showhauler is available to purchase secondhand with just 9,000 miles on the clock for a whopping $349,990, which is nevertheless a pretty good deal considering just how much machine you get for your buck. And if you’re preparing for the apocalypse or maybe just a trip around the world, this is the kind of truck you should be looking for.
